Who invented bubble wrap?
Bubble wrap was invented in 1957 by engineers Alfred Fielding and Marc Chavannes, who were actually trying to make textured wallpaper.
Going deeper
Fielding and Chavannes sealed two shower curtains together, trapping air bubbles between them, hoping to sell it as a trendy, textured wallpaper. Nobody wanted it on their walls.
They tried selling it as greenhouse insulation next, which also flopped. Its big break came when IBM used it to protect a new computer during shipping. The pair founded Sealed Air, which still makes it today.
